In Business nets awards in press contest - Las Vegas Sun Posted: 25 Sep 2009 03:00 AM PDT Fri, Sep 25, 2009 (3 a.m.) In Business Las Vegas won three first-place awards and 11 other awards in the Nevada Press Association's 2008 Better Newspaper Contest. In Business won the top business journalism award in its class — weeklies with circulations from 6,000 to 19,999 — for best business coverage, the fifth time in the past six years that the paper has collected the top business-coverage honor. Judges had high praise for In Business, which they said was "in a class by itself. The place to go for your business news." Chris Morris took first place for his "Perilous Times" illustration, which judges said was an "expertly executed illustration for a story about a stormy economy." The paper's "40 under 40" special section took the first-place award in the special section, editorial category. "Great concept, excellent biographies and interesting information," judges wrote. "Beautiful publication." The results were announced Saturday night at an awards banquet at the Winnemucca Convention Center. The contest was judged by members of the Wyoming Press Association. "We are most pleased to receive recognition from the Nevada Press Association," In Business Executive Editor Jeff Simpson said. "We work every week to provide our subscribers with the most important business news and the information they need to help their businesses thrive. It is especially gratifying to be consistently recognized as the top business weekly in the state." In Business' sister publications collected dozens of awards. The Las Vegas Sun won 17 first-place awards, including the prestigious community service and freedom of the press honors, as well as 30 other awards. The Henderson Home News won 14 writing, editing, photo and design awards and three advertising awards. The Home News won awards for overall general excellence and advertising general excellence among the state's large weeklies. The Boulder City News won nine journalism awards and four advertising awards, including advertising general excellence. Las Vegas Weekly won 12 awards, including four first place honors. First Spouses on Pittsburgh tour - BBC Business Posted: 25 Sep 2009 03:36 AM PDT | They are an eclectic bunch: An ex- actress who hung out with Tom Cruise in a 'previous life', an ex-girlfriend of a Rolling Stone and a keen motorcylist. Not easy, perhaps, to keep them all entertained. But Michelle Obama, their host, has a list of events to keep the G20 First Spouses busy in Pittsburgh. While G20 leaders talk shop their wives will be entertained by cellist Yo-Yo Ma and country singer Trisha Yearwood. Later, an Andy Warhol time capsule will be opened in their presence. The spouses of the G20 leaders are not short of qualifications or achievements. Sarah Brown ran her own public relations company and Michelle Obama - a self proclaimed "statistical oddity" - grew up on the South Side of Chicago and studied law at Princeton and Harvard. Some are more offbeat - Miyuki Hatoyama, wife of Yukio, the newly elected Japanese prime minister has already made it into Time magazine's top ten list of colourful First Spouses. She has recently written a book in which she revealed that her soul has travelled via UFO to Venus, which she said is "an extremely beautiful place". She has also reportedly hung out with Tom Cruise - not recently, but in a previous life, when the Hollywood actor was Japanese. Others have more conventional biographies. Laureen Harper, the wife of Stephen, the Canadian Prime Minister, once worked as a graphic artist and offers her home to the Ottawa SPCA as a foster home for kittens. She also, her husband's website says, enjoys riding her motorcycle. Carla Bruni Sarkozy needs no introduction; the wife of the French president is a pop singer, internationally famous model and a former girlfriend of Mick Jagger. Bearing gifts Already, they have received welcome gifts from Mrs Obama - a porcelain tea set, a honey vase and a jar of honey. The purple and platinum design of the tea cups is inspired by the gold and purple china that President Lincoln and his wife used. The honey is from the White House's first beehive. On Thursday, they enjoyed dinner at Rosemont Farm, a working farm that raises live stock and produces fruits and vegetables, owned by Teresa Heinz, the millionaire philanthropist and wife of John Kerry, a former Democratic Presidential candidate. Lets rock and roll Any of the First Spouses harbouring rock star ambitions - step forward, Mrs Bruni Sarkozy - will enjoy the trip to Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School for a tour and performance with students and music masters. The spouses will drop in on a student orchestra performance and a rehearsal of Les Miserables, the classic musical. They will then attend a performance by artists including Yo-Yo Ma, the cellist, and Trisha Yearwood, one of the biggest selling artists in the history of country music. Her most recent album is "Heaven, heartache and the power of love", a title which may have some resonance for women trekking around the globe in their partners' shadows. Top ten hits include "She's in love with the boy" and " How do I live". Fifteen minutes of art No tour of Pittsburgh would be complete without a visit to the Andy Warhol museum. The artist was born and raised in the city. Spouses will have the chance to silk screen one of Andy Warhol's images of a flower onto a tote bag that they then get to take home. The artist, who famously said that everyone would enjoy fifteen minutes of fame, also stored 600 time capsules, each containing a variety of items. As the day draws to a close and their husbands tweak the details of their communique, the First Spouses will get to witness their own bit of history - "the opening of one of Andy Warhol's heretofore sealed Time Capsules". St. Vincent Strambi - Catholic Online Posted: 25 Sep 2009 12:01 AM PDT Feastday: September 25 Vincent Strambi was the son of a druggist, and was born on January 1 at Civitavecchia, Italy. He resisted his parents' wish that he become a diocesan priest, and though he studied at the diocesan seminary and was ordained in 1767, he joined the Passionists in 1768 after attending a retreat given by St. Paul of the Cross. Vincent became a professor of theology, was made provincial in 1781, and in 1801, was appointed bishop of Macera and Tolentino. He was expelled from his See when he refused to take an oath of alliance to Napoleon in 1808, but returned in 1813 with the downfall of Napoleon. When Napoleon escaped from Elba, Murat made Macerta his headquarters, and when his troops were defeated by the Austrians, Vincent dissuaded him from sacking and destroying the town. He imposed reform in his See that caused threats to his life, labored for his people during a typhus epidemic, and resigned his See on the death of Pope Pius VII to become one of the advisers of his old friend Pope Leo XII in Rome. Vincent died on January 1, and was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950. His feast day is September 25. |
