Harris, Acklin Want More Police, Ravenstahl Says Plan Too Costly

POSTED: 9:02 am EDT October 30, 2009
UPDATED: 9:22 am EDT October 30, 2009

Pittsburgh's three mayoral candidates squared off in their final debate on Thursday and WTAE's news exchange partners at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported us one of the biggest issues addressed in the debate was the police force.

Independent candidate Kevin Acklin said he plans to add 200 officers to the city's police force.

Fellow independent Franco "Dok" Harris said he wants to add 80 to 90 additional officers.

Pittsburgh's current mayor Luke Ravenstahl says the city can't afford either plan, saying 200 hundred new officers would cost an additional $17 million.

The city currently has around 900 police officers, which costs $68 million, the Trib reported.

Harris said investing in public safety was "the only" way to maintain neighborhood integrity.

Acklin said that more police should be a priority because citizens are feeling unsafe and the murder rate is up.

During the debate Ravenstahl pointed out he attends dozens of community meetings each month and has been at the helm of neighborhood improvement initiatives.

Of Poe and his many romances - Times Herald-Record

One of the more intriguing biographies is that of Edgar Allan Poe, the 19th-century writer and poet famous for "The Raven," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Pit and the Pendulum" and other works.

Among the many odd tales of Poe's life is his marrying his 13-year-old cousin at age 26. That makes And They Flew Theater's production of "Consumed: Love, Passion and Poe" a pretty engaing little play. It will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday at Unison Arts.

Amy Gunderson, Heidi Eklund and Wayne Pyle act out Poe's controversial romantic life through a script based on the poetry and prose written between Poe and his lovers. You may grow a new appreciation — or disdain — of Poe after watching.

Tickets are $12 for members, $16 for nonmembers, and $2 extra at the door. Unison Arts is at 68 Mountain Rest Road, New Paltz. For more information, visit www.unisonarts.org.
