Biographies: Who are the new senators? - Vancouver Sun Posted: 29 Jan 2010 06:33 AM PST Biographies of the five senators appointed Friday by Prime Minister Stephen Harper Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu (Quebec) is the founding president of the Murdered or Missing Persons Families Association, which he founded after his daughter Julie was killed in 2002. Boisvenu is the co-founder of the Le Nid centre, which helps abused women in Val d'Or, and of a school camp for underprivileged youth in Estrie. He has held several senior positions, including regional director for the Department of Recreation, Game and Fisheries and for the Department of the Environment in Quebec. He lives with his wife in Sherbrooke. Bob Runciman (Ontario) has been a member of the Ontario legislature representing Leeds—Grenville in Eastern Ontario since 1981. Runciman has served as a provincial cabinet minister for three premiers, including terms as minister of public safety and security, economic development and trade, consumer and commercial relations, solicitor general and minister of correctional services. Runciman began his political career as a municipal councillor in the city of Brockville and was previously employed in the chemical industry and worked as a reporter for two eastern Ontario daily newspapers. Runciman lives in Brockville with his wife. Vim Kochhar (Ontario) is the president and founder of the Vimal Group of Companies in Toronto. He was responsible for project management of major hotels around the world. For the past 30 years, Kochhar has played an active role in the community by creating the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons. He is currently serving as board member for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and as chair of the Canadian Paralympic Foundation. Born in India, Kochhar received his engineering degree at the University of Texas and immigrated to Canada in 1967, becoming a Canadian citizen in 1974. Elizabeth (Beth) Marshall (Newfoundland and Labrador) was the auditor general of Newfoundland and Labrador for 10 years prior to her election to provincial politics in 2003. She represents the riding of Topsail. Marshall has had 23 years of experience in the provincial public service, including deputy minister of social services and deputy minister of works, services and transportation. Marshall holds a bachelor of science degree from Memorial University and has been a chartered accountant since 1979. She is married and lives in Topsail. Rose-May Poirier (New Brunswick) is a member of legislative assembly representing Rogersville-Kouchibouguac. First elected in 1999, Poirier has served as minister of human resources, minister of local government and minister responsible for aboriginal affairs. Prior to her election to the provincial legislature, Poirier worked as an insurance representative and as an executive for Tupperware Canada. She also served on the Saint-Louis de Kent town council. Aquilinus was born in Bavaria. He left his native land to avoid being made a bishop, went to Italy and settled in Milan. A vigorous opponent of Arianism, he was so effective in his preaching against the heresy that a group of Arians murdered him. He died in 650. His feast day is January 29th.
