The Hybritech Alumni: Where Are They Now? - Xconomy Posted: 12 Mar 2010 06:47 AM PST Biotech, people, startupsLuke Timmerman 3/12/10Plenty of ink has been devoted over the years about how San Diego's biotech family tree can be traced back to Hybritech. The company was born in biotech's halcyon days in the '70s, and it quickly became the magnet for young scientific and business talent in San Diego. After Eli Lilly bought the place for more than $400 million in 1986, many of the young turks went on to plant seeds at new ventures all around San Diego and other biotech hubs around the world. That story has been told well over the years, including this piece from 2003, and another in 2008 from the San Diego Union-Tribune. So instead of focusing on the well-known characters who made it happen—Ivor Royston, Howard Birndorf, Ted Greene and others—I wondered what I might find if I used modern social networking tools to dig deeper and assemble an updated directory of where Hybritech alumni are today, encompassing bigshots and rank-and-file. Getting to know the history also seemed like a good idea as I prepare to host the big event Xconomy is organizing on the 20-year outlook for San Diego life sciences on March 31. The methods here, I must say, are pretty basic. I sought to include anybody who worked at Hybritech at some point. I looked around in the archives of other publications like the Union-Tribune, and The Scientist. I cited biographies from Forbes.com. I made heavy use of employment histories people have posted on LinkedIn. And of course, I'm citing some of my own original reporting from Xconomy. It should be noted that I can't guarantee that all the information is up to date, especially the user-generated content from LinkedIn. I ended up with more than 110 names. Now's where I hope you can step in to help. If you see anything that's out of date, or incorrect, please let me know and I'll fix it. Over time, I hope this story can become a richer and more valuable resource for Hybritech alumni to connect and re-connect. With that, here's the list I've put together in alphabetical order, with the most updated titles and affiliations I found online. If you have any questions, comments, or new information, please send me a note at ltimmerman@xconomy.com or editors@xconomy.com. Acclaimed Spanish novelist Miguel Delibes dies at 89 - Minneapolis Star Tribune Posted: 12 Mar 2010 04:53 AM PST MADRID, Spain - Miguel Delibes, an acclaimed and prolific novelist whose work featured gritty depictions of rural life in post-civil war Spain and psychological analyses of characters facing turning points, died Friday. He was 89. Delibes, who had been fighting cancer of the colon for several years, died at his home in the north central city of Valladolid shortly around 7 a.m. (0800GMT), Spanish National Radio said, citing his family. Speaking on the radio, Education Minister Angel Gabilondo said "We must remember him as a good person and a great writer." Delibes started off as a cartoonist for a provincial newspaper before becoming a reporter, editor and finally a novelist in a career spanning more than 50 years, culminating in his winning the Spanish-speaking world's top literary award, the Cervantes Prize, in 1993, among other accolades. He was also a member of the Spanish Royal Academy, the official watchdog of the Spanish language. "I feel sorry that there was not enough time for him to win the Nobel, because he was one of those authors who deserved it, said Culture Minister Angeles Gonzalez-Sinde. "He was a much-read writer, incredibly prolific and also a great inspiration for other artists," she said. Delibes hailed from the city of Valladolid in the Castilian heartland of central Spain, and his deep roots there and love of rural life — he was an avid hunter and wrote often about it — surfaced repeatedly in his books. One of his most popular ones, "Los Santos Inocentes" (The Innocent Saints), published in 1981, illustrates the impoverished existence of peasants living under a selfish and wealthy landowner. In a dramatic scene near the end, a simple-minded peasant rigs a trap that hangs the rich man after he shoots the peasant's pet bird with a hunting rifle. The book was made into a movie in 1984 by Spanish director Mario Camus. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
Meet Stacy-Deanne, Award-winning Author of Mysteries ... - Associated Content Posted: 12 Mar 2010 06:47 AM PST " I Struggled to Get Published, I Learned the Business. I Had a Few Setbacks but I Didn't Give Up and Finally One Day I Got My First Contract. "Introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Stacy-Deanne (Dee-Anne). I'm an award-winning author of mysteries, thrillers and suspense novels. I have been writing professionally since 1997. I enjoy writing books especially centering on interracial and multicultural romances and relationships. As a reader I love mysteries and thrillers, historical romances, interracial romances and the good old classics!Tell us about your books. My first published book is "Divas of the New Millennium", a compilation biography book on popular female singers, published by Amber Communications Group, Inc. in 2005. My novels include "Everlasting" a modern day Latino Romeo and Juliet type love story published in 2007 by Simon and Schuster and "Melody" a thriller and mystery also by Simon and Schuster in 2008. "Everlasting" and "Melody" have both won two YOUNity Guild Literary awards. Why did you become a writer? It's a part of me and who I am. I also had to find a way to target all my insanity so that I wouldn't unleash it on the rest of the world. Writing mysteries and thrillers about villians allows me to do that. Tell us about your publishing journey. To save time I'll say it's no different than any other writer's journey. I struggled to get published, I learned the business. I had a few setbacks but I didn't give up and finally one day I got my first contract. My road was full of rejection and heartache as well and I think every writer who is traditionally published goes through that. But you have to if you hope to ever get to your goal of being published. It's about how hard you work and how bad you want it! Awards and recognition? My books have been reviewed in magazines including Billboard Magazine, Black Beat Magazine and Parle Magazine as well as numerous sites online. I've been interviewed on many blogs and literary sites. I've won awards for all three of my books including four YGA awards for "Melody" and "Everlasting" and was also honored with an award from Disilgold Soul Magazine for "Divas in the New Millennium". In 2006 I was profiled in the NAACP nominated book, "Literary Divas: The Top 100+ African-American Women in Writing".
