Festival planned for documentaries - North Bay Nugget

Posted 3 hours ago

Documentary filmmakers could have a venue just for them in North Bay with plans to create an annual Doc North festival starting next year.

It's a good opportunity for people to see what's being created out there," said Lieann Koivukowski, director of the Near North Mobile Media Lab, a non-profit group that offers equipment and workshops to media artists.

She said the festival and workshops are scheduled for Feb. 18 and 19 and open to professionals and students at home and across Canada and the United States.

The festival will have categories for professional film and documentary makers, student filmmakers at Ontario schools and a Speed Doc Challenge offering local producers a chance to film, cut and screen their work in three days.

There will be categories for biographies, experimental work, documentaries that focus on art and artists in the community, a political, social and environmental category for activist documentary makers and Canadiana for work involving heritage and history.

I particularly want the stories to be about their community," Koivukowski said of landmarks, people and events.

She said plans have been in the works for the past year to create a documentary festival that's in line with what the media lab offers to its members.

The operating funds are sponsored through the Canada Council for the Arts, and the project is awaiting approval this summer of a grant from the Ontario Arts Council.

Koivukowski said a festival committee will be formed, along with a team to oversee the Speed Doc Challenge and jurors to judge submissions.

To learn more about the festival or to become involved, call the media lab at 476-6402 or send an e-mail to mobilemedialab@gmail.com
